Choosing a bed
A bed is the most important piece of furniture you can buy. We spend roughly a third of our lives in bed, between six and eight hours each night. This is why we suggest you come in-store when you have plenty of time and no distractions as a bed can dramatically improve your health and wellbeing.
Choosing and buying a bed is an intensely personal choice. Finding the right combination of both the bed base and mattress will give the ultimate degree of support to suit your needs. Many people think that buying a new mattress will give them a brand new bed. However, it’s very important to check the condition and type of the existing base. If it is an old base the new mattress will follow its worn contours thus bringing no improvement. Different types of bases may also make the mattress feel different from the shop floor model. Check if your base has a solid base, sprung slats, or a sprung upholstered base. We can then make sure you try the mattress on a similar base in-store. The right bed is one that is comfortable and supportive. Different people find different beds comfortable so it is important to try a range of beds for comparison. If the bed is for two people, it is also important for both to try the beds. The larger the bed the larger the sleeping area each person has. Lack of space is one of the main reasons for poor sleep so bigger is always better.
Things to avoid when choosing your bed:
Prodding with your hand is no use, especially pocketed sprung mattresses that are designed to depress with your full body weight. Sitting on the edge of the bed will also give a false impression, particularly if the divan has a sprung base. The only proper way to test a bed is to lie on it – preferably both on your back and side for an extended period of time.
What's the Snug firmness rating?
Comfort is very subjective. There are lots of different "feels" so we recommend you try a few out and see which feels best. Here's a guide to our number snugness ratings.
1 - Soft/Gentle - Best for side sleepers - If you sleep on your side and like the feeling of being cocooned these may be your best option.
2 - Medium - Best for sleeping in several positions - If you change positions whilst you sleep from your side to your back or are a side sleeper who prefers a firmer feel.
3 - Medium/Firm - Best for back or side sleepers - If you change positions whilst you sleep from your side to your back.
4 - Firm - Best for back or front sleepers - If you prefer to sleep on your back or on your front you may prefer these mattresses which offer the right support.
5 - Extra Firm- Best for back sleepers - Our firmest level of support also sometimes referred to as an orthopaedic mattress offers very firm support.
How often should I turn my mattress?
Always refer to the manufacturer's instructions. However, unless you have purchased a 'No Turn' mattress we recommend that during the first six months of use, your mattress should be turned every two weeks and then monthly thereafter.
You should alternate between turning the mattress over and rotating it from top-to-tail to ensure even settlement. If your mattress has handles, use these to position it on the divan base. No turn mattresses should still be rotated on a monthly basis.
Dunlopillo mattresses do not need to be rotated or turned at all.
How often should you change your mattress?
It is recommended that you change your mattress every seven years. After this length of time, it will have been subjected to more than 20,000 hours of wear and tear. That's bound to have taken a toll! So, if you're wondering whether it's time to replace your mattress, the first thing you should consider is how long you've had it.
What does a mattress topper do?
A mattress topper is an extra layer of cushioning that goes over your mattress before you put your bed sheets on. They provide additional support and comfort, while also making your bed feel more luxurious and cosy.

Your guarantee is for domestic use only by you or your family. If there’s evidence of product abuse, misuse, animals have been allowed to sleep on the product, or other pet damage your guarantee will be void.
Mattress settlement explained
A mattress with generous layers of comfort fillings should be expected to demonstrate ‘body impressions’ and is an indication that the mattress is performing correctly. Similar to a good pair of leather shoes, a new mattress will ‘relax’ and take on the shape of the user. The extent to which the mattress will show signs of settlement depends on a number of factors such as the weight of the user, the amount of fillings, the type of fillings, the firmness of the mattress, whether the mattress is two-sided or single sided. Larger size mattresses such as super king size (180cm wide) and king size (150cm wide) will show signs of settlement more so than a smaller size mattress. This is because there is a wider area in the centre of the mattress that doesn’t get used and the fillings don’t become compacted. This ‘ridge in the middle’ accentuates the sleeping areas on either side of it where the fillings will have settled or compacted during the night. The Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) provides guidelines that suggest the settlement of up to 4cm is acceptable for a mattress that is 5 years old. I addition settlement depth may be higher when the mattress has been recently used as the mattress will recover some height by the time it is to be next used.
In our experience settlement can be a cause for unnecessary concern. Whilst these body impressions can be quite noticeable, they are not necessarily a sign that the mattress support has failed. A mattress that has collapsed will be very evident. There will be a distinct lack of support, almost a sensation that you can feel right through to the bottom surface of the mattress.
We recommend prolonging your mattress's life and minimise the effects of settlement you follow the care instructions supplied by the manufacturer. This will include rotating the mattress 180 degrees on a no turn mattress and turning and rotating a traditional turn-able mattress on a regular basis.
One of the best mattresses that avoids settlement is a Dunlopillo mattress with a 100% pure latex core. Settlement issues are reduced as the pure latex core will only lose around 2% of its overall height during its lifetime. Their Mattresses and beds are guaranteed for 8 years. They require no turn and even no rotation of the mattress due to its resilience.
Memory Foam
Odour: Some residual foam odour will be apparent when your memory mattress is first unwrapped. This is quite normal and is not cause for concern. Please give the mattress time to air, leave unwrapped in a well ventilated room for several hours before making your bed up.
Softening: Slight softening of the foam over time is normal and should not be seen as a fault. If you have not had a memory foam mattress before please allow a couple of weeks to become used to the very different feel of a memory foam mattress and remember that indentations from body weight will recover during the day.
Discolouration: Yellowing of the foam is a natural occurrence and will not affect the performance of the mattress.
Heat Retention: The insulation properties of memory foam can cause a degree of heat retention. It should be remembered that the mattress will not produce heat itself and body heat is dissipated continuously. If you get hot during the night or are going through menopause a memory foam mattress may not be for you. Look at a natural filling mattress or a latex mattress.

What is the difference between lumens and watts?
Lumens measure the brightness of a light source, while watts measure the energy consumption. In the past, people chose bulbs based on watts, assuming higher wattage means brighter light. With modern LED technology, lumens are a more accurate way to determine brightness. For example, an LED bulb with 800 lumens provides the same brightness as a traditional 60-watt incandescent bulb but uses much less energy.
-
What lights can I put in a bathroom?
Bathroom Lighting Regulations
This depends on where in the bathroom the light is going and how far it will be from the water around the bath, sink and shower.
IP Ratings (Ingress Protection Ratings) are specified on each light fitting. All installations must comply with guidelines that are based on a zonal concept. Each zone rating (IP) is determined by the degree of risk of electric shock.
ZONE 0: This is the area inside the bath or shower basin and is rated at IPx7.
ZONE 1: Refers to the area above the bath or shower up to a height of 2.25 metres and carries a minimum rating of IPx4.
ZONE 2: Covers an area 0.6 metres wide immediately next to, and all around zone 1, plus the area over 2.5 metres high directly above the bath or shower. Wash basins should also be treated as zone 2. The minimum rating here is IP x 4. Where water jets are likely to be used for cleaning purposes in zones 1 and 2, the rating is a minimum IPx5.
OUTSIDE ZONE: Covers any area outside Zone 1 and Zone 2, there is no special requirement in this zone. Bathrooms are now allowed to contain a socket outlet, this must be located 3M outside Zone 1. Lighting circuits and any socket outlet circuit in a room containing a bath and/or shower must be provided with 30MA RCD protection.
AREAS AROUND SINKS: Covers up to 60cm. Zone 2 IPx4 luminaires should be installed in this zone.
-
How much light do I need for my room?
The amount of light needed for a room depends on the room's purpose, size, and natural light availability. A general guideline is to aim for 20 lumens per square foot for ambient lighting in living areas and 30-40 lumens per square foot for task-oriented spaces like kitchens and workspaces. To calculate the total lumens needed, multiply the room's square footage by the recommended lumens per square foot. Our team can also provide personalised lighting advice based on your specific needs.
-
What does PIR stand for?
PIR stands for Passive Infrared. PIR sensors detect infrared radiation emitted by warm objects, such as people. When someone enters the sensor's field of view, it detects the change in infrared radiation and triggers the light to turn on. PIR sensors are commonly used in security lighting and energy-saving applications.
-
Are LED lights dimmable?
Yes, many LED lights are dimmable, but it’s important to use them with compatible dimmer switches. Some LEDs are not dimmable, so always check the product specifications. Using the wrong type of dimmer can cause flickering or reduced lifespan of the LED lights. If you need help selecting the right dimmable LED and dimmer switch, our customer service team is here to assist you.
-
What are smart lights?
Smart lights are lighting products that can be controlled remotely via smartphone apps, voice assistants, or home automation systems. They offer features like dimming, colour changing, scheduling, and integration with other smart home devices.
-
How long do your bulbs last?
The lifespan of our bulbs varies depending on the type and usage. LED bulbs typically last the longest, often up to 25,000 to 50,000 hours. This means that if used for an average of 3 hours per day, an LED bulb can last over 20 years. Other types of bulbs, like CFLs and halogens, have shorter lifespans. Specific lifespan information is provided in the product details for each bulb.
-
What does Integral LED mean?
Integral LED refers to LED lighting where the light source is built into the fixture itself, rather than using a replaceable bulb. This design allows for more compact, efficient, and sometimes more aesthetically pleasing lighting solutions. Integral LEDs are known for their long lifespan, energy efficiency, and consistent light quality.
-
What does Colour Temperature mean?
Colour temperature refers to the hue of light produced by a bulb, measured in Kelvins (K). Lower Kelvin values (2700K-3000K) produce a warm, yellowish light, similar to traditional incandescent bulbs, ideal for living rooms and bedrooms. Mid-range Kelvin values (3500K-4100K) offer a neutral white light suitable for kitchens and bathrooms. Higher Kelvin values (5000K-6500K) emit a cool, bluish light, often used in workspaces and areas requiring high visibility.

Buying & Care Guide - Beds & Mattresses
All our beds are crafted to the highest standards in the UK by British manufacturers. By using this care guide and the directions outlined within it, you can expect your mattress to provide comfort and support for 7-10 years.
Settlement
When you first receive your mattress, slight hollows may appear in the sleeping areas. This is quite normal and is caused by the fillings compacting under body weight, not faulty springs or fillings. The fillings will compress to an even level over the entire surface, which can take up to 4 weeks for your body to adjust and the filling to settle evenly.
Turning and rotating the mattress as described below will benefit and help this process, and ensure even settlement.
Turning Sprung Mattresses
All of our sprung mattresses have substantial layers of upholstery fillings and require turning and rotating to ensure even settlement across the whole surface of the bed. Rotate the mattress head to foot and turn over completely once a fortnight for the first twelve weeks, then once a month. If you do not turn your mattress regularly, hollows will form in the sleeping area. To maximise the comfort and longevity of your mattress, follow the directions on the care label attached to the mattress.
Turning Latex, Memory Foam & No Turn Mattresses
These types of mattresses only have one sleeping surface so cannot be turned over. The mattress should, however, be rotated through 180 degrees monthly. With ongoing use, the cells within the foam will open fully and the sleeping surface will react more quickly. The mattress may feel as if it is gradually getting softer, but the important pressure relieving properties remain the same, and eventually the whole mattress will react evenly.
Dimensions
A mattress is made slightly shorter than the base to accommodate bed linen and some headboards. A pocket sprung mattress can compact during storage and transport, due to it's construction, and may be slightly short on arrival, but this will rectify itself with use.
Bed Bases
Our mattresses (excluding bedstead models) have bases that are recommended for use with them. Using a new mattress on an old base can damage it. Please make sure your base is solid and not damaged.
Handling
Many of our mattresses are heavy and you will need help when turning or moving your mattress. The handles provided are ideal for turning or rotating but are not designed for the mattress to be carried far. Do not roll or fold the mattress, as this can damage the internal components.
Sitting on the edge of the bed puts undue strain on the springs at the edges and can damage the mattresses border. Do not allow children to jump on the mattress, as this will cause damage.
Protecting and Cleaning the Mattress
After delivery, the mattress should be aired for a minimum of four hours to freshen and remove any aroma that may be caused by storage. The mattress should be aired every week by turning the linen back for a few hours. We recommend you use a mattress protector or an under blanket below the sheet. We have a great selection in store. Try to avoid using a plastic sheet on or under the mattress as this can prevent air circulation and may cause condensation. Clean the bed every few months with a soft brush, do not vacuum as the process can damage the filling. Any spills should be absorbed with a dry cloth and a mild detergent solution. If you follow these recommendations, your bed should provide years of comfort and support.

Buying & Care Guide - Rugs
Once you’ve found rug perfection, you’ll want to keep it looking new for as long as possible. If you spend just a few minutes per week preening and grooming your rug, you’ll keep that “showroom” appeal. On opening, re-roll your rug pile out and leave it in a warm room for 24 hours before putting it in place. This will help to reduce wrinkles and curling from packing.
Vacuuming
If you've chosen a rug that is suitable to be vacuumed, we recommend to do so every other week with a suction type vacuum to prevent dirt from filtering into the pile where it can cause damage to the fibre, look and feel of the rug. If your rug has a fringe, avoid hovering the fringe as this can cause the fringe to pull and unravel. To avoid damage such as the colour fading from sunlight, rotate your rug weekly so that it’s not affected by direct sunlight. You should never use a rotating brush cleaner, as this can cause damage to the backing and loosen threads.
Spills
It’s going to happen at some point, wine, tea or coffee will be spilt on your rug centrepiece. Grab a clean white cloth or paper towel and dab the spilt liquid. Do Not Rub, this will cause the spillage to spread. Simply wipe the stain to clean thoroughly then throw away the used wipe. The blotting action lifts the spillage. It is not like other products which sometimes mix the stain into the carpet fibres. You can dab with a carpet cleaner until the stain has been removed, pat excess moisture with a paper towel and allow it to dry. On stubborn stains, particularly dark stains on a light coloured rug, the cleaning process will need to be repeated. Please note: You should never use spot cleaner on a wool rug, this will “set” the stain, making it impossible to remove.
The materials below should always be kept away from fire. Please check the care instructions of your rug, to keep it looking new and protected from any damage.
Wool Rugs: Some loss or ‘balling’ of surface fibres is normal on new wool rugs and is not a defect. This should reduce with normal use and regular cleaning, with a hand brush. Do not vacuum.
